A Monumental Milestone for Neurosurgery in Ethiopia

A significant advancement in neurosurgery has taken place in Ethiopia with the successful performance of a functional hemispherectomy at St. Peter’s Specialized Hospital. This procedure, conducted for the first time in the country, was led by a team from UC Davis Health, including Dr. Julia Sharma, Dr. Yared Nigusie A., and Dr. Abdi Ermolo, MD.

In addition to this landmark surgery, numerous procedures were also carried out at Zewditu Hospital and Jimma University Specialized Hospital. The UC Davis Health team not only performed surgeries but also provided invaluable knowledge and hands-on mentorship to neurosurgery residents and staff at each hospital. This initiative underscores a strong commitment to advancing global health and enhancing neurological care in Ethiopia.
